monthly belly dance showcase - october 8
hi everyone,

here is the updated flyer for the monthly showcase.

i hope you can come out, enjoy a drink and the show.  it is especially important that we have a good turnout for our first monthly showcase, because if the turnout is good, the venue and band will be happy to provide us a monthly space .  our goal for the showcase is to provide local dancers, and out of town guests, an opportunity to work with live music, and present all genres of belly dance to the public.

so please come out, have a drink, enjoy the show, and help ensure a place for local dancers to dazzle each month.

link to flyer: we would really appreciate it if you would repost the flyer.  thanks!

I'm brand freaking new to all this. I live in N. SD county and am looking or a local class, preferably fusion of some flavor, and really want to meet cool people to dance with.

A little background on me. I am a long time SCA geek. With an exclusive Irish focus. A passing interest for Middle Eastern dance but, not really. But recently some new friends online have sent me into the beautiful world of Dark Fusion. However, while that intrigues me most, I am interested in learning about tribal and/or fusion in general. I have a couple videos on order to get started and some contacts in OC and north but would love to meet and learn from locals.

Any recommendations?

Upcoming performance in Long Beach
Sunday April 2, 2006, the Sunday Shimmy Showcase at the Coffee Haven in Long Beach, CA (1708 East Broadway, 562-437-3785) will be taken over by Orange County Tribal Troupe, Ban-dál. The performance is free, in an intimate setting, and starts at 7:00p.m. If you plan on coming, make sure you leave yourself at least half an hour to park, because the parking is street parking only and can be difficult to acquire.

The performance is much more balanced than any we've done before. There will be balancing; candle dancing; veil dancing; solos; duets; trios; and tribe dancing, some choreographed and some improvisational. It should be a very fun evening leaving you wanting more (like all good performances).

Hopefully we'll see you there!

We Have Come to Be Danced
(x-posted to my own journal and socalbellyclub )

I got this from a Gothic Bellydancer, Victoria, who got it from her teacher Jan. I think this describes the way I view dancing---whether it is bellydance or hip hop or any other kind of dancing I do:

We have come to be danced
Not the pretty dance
Not the pretty pretty, pick,me,
Pick me dance
But the claw our way back into
The belly of the sacred, sensual
Animal dance
The unhinged, unplugged, cat is out
Of its box dance
The holding the precious moment in
The palms of our hands and feet dance

We have come to be danced
Not the jiffy booby, shake your booty
For him dance
But the wring the sadness from
Our skin dance
Blow the chip off our shoulder dance
The slap the apology from our
Posture dance

We have come to be danced
Not the monkey see, monkey do dance
One, two dance like you
One two three, dance like
Me dance
But the grave robber, tomb stalker
Tearing scabs and scars open dance
The rub the rhythm raw against our
Souls dance

We have come to be danced
Not the nice invisible, self-conscious
Shuffle but the matted hair flying,
voodoo mama shaman shakin’
Ancient bones dance
The strip us from our casings, return
Our wings, sharpen our claws and
Tongues dance
The shed dead cells and slip into the
Luminous skin of love dance

We have come to be danced
Not the hold our breath and wallow
In the shallow end of the floor dance
But the meeting of the trinity; the
Body, breath, and beat dance
The shout hallelujah from the top
Of our thighs dance
The mother may I? Yes you may
Take 10 giant leaps dance
The Olly Olly Oxen Free
Free Free dance
The everyone can come to our heaven dance

We have come to be danced
Where the kingdom’s collide
In the cathedral of flesh
To burn back into the light
To unravel, to play, to fly, to pray
To root in skin sanctuary

We have come to be danced

I really like that. In some ways that also describes my artistic views. I have never really thought to do any of my arts/crafts/dancing except to enlighten myself and possibly inspire others.
